Chapter Four

Chloe

I don’t know what made me say that, but once I did, I realize how fucking right it feels. I hope I am not making a mistake, but everything in me tells me that I am not. So, I do something else I’ve never done and jump feet first, consequences be damned.

“There are no flights to South Dakota for the next several days,” he says looking up from his phone.

“That sucks, when are you supposed to be back at work?”

“Monday.”

“We could drive. My SUV is four-wheel drive.”

“You’re serious about coming home with me?”

“I am if you are.”

“What about school? Your job? Your parents?”

“I hate school and my job. My parents will deal. I am an adult and can do what I want to, and what I want is to be with you. I know it’s sudden and crazy, but I know what I want.”

“I feel like the most selfish bastard on the planet, but I need you with me.”

“Good, cause it’s settled. How long of a drive is it?”

“About twenty-two hours non-stop. We’ll make some stops of course.”

“Well, this will surely be a test of our relationship.”

“A lot of relationships don’t survive such things. That or furniture building from IKEA.”

“We will be different, I know it. I can be ready in twenty minutes.”

“You are going to pack your whole life up in twenty minutes?”

“The furniture isn’t mine. I just have clothes and a few knickknacks here. Most of my stuff is at my parent's house in Georgia. The house I grew up in. This is just where I am staying for this semester.”

“I see. I’ll help you pack.”

“Excellent,” I say, pulling myself up for a kiss.

We work quickly and are done in less than twenty minutes. I leave a note for my roommates, as well as a check for the rest of the semester's rent. I call my mom and leave her a message to let her know I am going to South Dakota. Given the time, I know she is at her ladies lunch. Once a week for as long as I can remember, she has lunch with “the girls”. I actually know she has been having a long-standing affair with my father’s stepbrother, Kenneth. Just as well, my father has been having an affair with his secretary for twelve years. I have an adorable eleven-year-old sister that no one knows is my sister. I take a quick shower and dress in the only outfit I left out. Another pair of yoga pants and a Georgetown sweatshirt. My boots from yesterday will have to suffice, but I know I will definitely take them off in the car.

Why parents think their kids don’t listen when they are whispering on the phone, I’ll never know. My father’s status as a senator doesn’t allow either of my parents to follow their hearts, so they spend less and less time together as the years go on. It’s sad and I always vowed I’d never let that happen to me.

Justin puts our bags in the back of my car and I toss him the keys.
